The "NF Environnement" and EU Eco-label marking schemes certify the "greenness" of a given product or service that nevertheless provides equivalent efficiency and performance compared to other, similar non-labelled products or services.
The "NF Environnement" mark, a French eco-label, was created by the AFNOR in 1991 and is delivered by AFNOR Certification.
The EU Eco-label was created in 1992 by the European Commission: this is the official European eco-label, delivered by AFNOR, the competent body designated to the European Commission by the public authorities. AFNOR has tasked this management mission to its subsidiary, AFNOR Certification.
These labels provide end-users and consumers with a guarantee that a given product or service has been found to have a lesser impact on the environment (water, air, energy, etc.) throughout its life cycle, starting with production (choice of raw materials, manufacturing conditions, etc.) right through to disposal as waste.
